The first classic of Saudi football has ended, which took place yesterday between Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal, and I do not know what the outcome of the match was, as I am writing this article a few hours before it starts. However, in light of the media campaign that preceded this match from some voices concerned with Al-Hilal’s affairs, protesting a decision imposed by the circumstances of air travel at this sensitive stage, it was necessary for the Saudi Football Federation to inform the clubs to be content with Saudi referees to officiate the Roshen League matches until further notice, that is, until these circumstances are overcome.

– I was astonished, wondering: why has the policy of the Al-Hilal supporters towards local referees changed, who had been “the beloved” for more than half a century, to become a “undesirable” referee for officiating their matches over the past three years? The matter did not stop there, but extended to exerting media pressure on clubs that do not request foreign referees!

– I found no answer to this question other than that the current generation of Saudi referees has greater self-confidence, unlike some previous generations that succumbed to pressure and “fear,” which cost several clubs, foremost among them Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr.

– Perhaps what happened in that era reminds us of the late Prince Abdulrahman bin Saud’s demand for the Football Federation to establish a special league for Al-Hilal, isolated from the other clubs, in a sarcastic phrase that expressed his objection to what he saw as disparity in refereeing treatment. We also cannot forget the famous statement by Dr. Adnan Jamjoum, when he said: “You made us hate football.”

– As for the most famous headlines in this context, it was the headline by my colleague Abdulaziz Sharqi in Al-Madina newspaper, when Al-Ittihad, according to what the Al-Ittihad community saw at the time, suffered from refereeing injustice in a match against Al-Hilal; he published a large headline across eight columns: “May God increase your reward in refereeing,” and offered condolences to the sports community on a page he chose to be black.

– I will not forget the well-known headline by Abu Nawaf, which was associated with a phase when he was an Al-Ittihad supporter, before he became today, as some describe him, “a die-hard Al-Hilal fan”!

– I return to the Saudi referee, who must receive support and backing, especially since we have noticed that the foreign referee himself makes refereeing mistakes no less than those made by the local referee. The truth is, I see that the majority of the current generation of our referees are interested in developing their refereeing abilities, and sometimes the Saudi referee excels over his foreign counterpart.

– All I hope is that our referees do not face media and public pressures like those they encountered in the past, which could shake their self-confidence and push us again to resort to the headline by my colleague Abdulaziz Sharqi: “May God increase your reward in refereeing,” and conversely, I hope that the alternative headline, when the Saudi referee shines and proves his competence, will be: “Long live the Saudi referee, long live him.”

Final Whisper

– I sincerely hope that referee Khalid Al-Turais has succeeded in officiating yesterday’s classic, and that he was not affected by the media pressures that preceded him, regardless of the match result, as what matters to me most is the triumph of justice. If justice prevails with the presence of the Saudi referee, that is a source of pride for us, and a turning point that restores our confidence in our local referees, whether some like it or not.

– From here, we thank the Saudi Football Federation and the Referees Committee for every step aimed at supporting the Saudi referee and granting him the confidence and opportunity to prove his abilities. We hope this trend continues, and that supporting the local referee becomes a fixed approach not dictated by temporary circumstances, but rather driven by confidence in his abilities and belief in his competence and fundamental mission.
