A private plane was forced to return and make an emergency landing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, after one of its doors detached during flight just a few minutes after takeoff, prompting the crew to issue a distress call and alert the airport’s fire and emergency teams.

The incident ended with the plane landing safely without any injuries among the nine people on board.

Emergency Call at 3,000 Feet

The aircraft, a Challenger 604, was on a flight from Abuja to Lagos when the incident occurred.

According to aviation reports, the plane departed from Abuja Airport, and after about three minutes, while it was approximately three nautical miles from the airport and climbing to about 3,000 feet, the crew informed the controllers of a problem with one of the doors and issued an urgent distress call.

Air traffic controllers immediately directed the aircraft to return to the airport, while notifying fire and ambulance teams to prepare for its arrival in case of any developments during the landing.

Return to the Airport

While the plane was on its way back, the crew tried to determine whether the door was still open or had completely detached, and requested the control tower to visually check it.

One of the controllers attempted to view the aircraft using binoculars, but its position and angle of approach made it difficult to confirm the state of the door at that moment.

Upon the plane’s return and safe landing, the controllers were able to see its body clearly, and it was determined that the door was no longer there.

9 People on Board the Plane

The Nigerian Transportation Safety Bureau confirmed that there were 9 people on board the aircraft, consisting of 6 passengers and 3 crew members, and that it returned to Abuja and landed safely after the incident.

The bureau stated that it has initiated an official investigation to determine the causes that led to the door detaching during the flight and to ascertain whether the incident was related to a technical malfunction, maintenance issue, or other factors.

Finding the Door

In a notable development, the detached door was later found in an agricultural area near Abuja, after falling away from the airport.

No reports of injuries on the ground due to the door’s fall were recorded, while local media circulated images and videos of the piece that fell from the aircraft.

Investigation into the Detachment Cause

Nigerian aviation authorities confirmed the occurrence of the incident, while investigators began collecting data and examining the aircraft, the detached door, and maintenance records.

The investigation is expected to focus on the door’s closing mechanism and the aircraft’s technical condition prior to takeoff, in order to determine the cause that led to its detachment during flight.

Authorities have not yet announced a definitive cause for the incident, while initial reports confirmed that the aircraft was able to land safely and left the runway without needing to be towed.
