According to the Population Estimates Statistics Bulletin for 2024, the fertility rate in Saudi Arabia has decreased to 2.7, according to the General Authority for Statistics. The fertility rate for Saudis in 2011 was 3.8, and it has continued to decline gradually over the past ten years (“Okaz,” Saturday, February 8, 2025). By comparing this to what has happened in Western, industrial, and developed countries, it seems likely that the trend will lead to the prevalence of having just one child. This issue is often viewed in light of the necessary population growth considerations to maintain demographic balance. However, more importantly from an individual perspective are the psychological and social studies on the phenomenon of the one-child policy, which was imposed in China by government decree and in other Western and industrial countries by the personal interests of couples. Despite the benefits of parents concentrating their resources on a single child, the only child suffers from what is called “only child syndrome,” which is a set of traits characteristic of a child raised without siblings, most of which are negative. There is a lack of social skills development in the child, along with suffering from loneliness, especially during childhood when they need someone to play with. However, the need for siblings does not end with childhood; anyone who grew up with siblings knows that all relationships can be fleeting, and even marital relationships can end at any time in divorce. Friends reveal their true nature during hardships, and parents eventually pass away, leaving the individual with only their siblings as a support system they can rely on, making them grateful to their parents for having given them brothers and sisters. This is well-known, and the assistance from parents to their children remains with them after their death. Of course, there are economic considerations that pressure towards reducing the number of children; thus, having more than one child often requires sacrifices from the couple. Looking at the benefits of having siblings, it seems to be a right of the child to have siblings and not be alone. However, having brothers and sisters is not inherently positive unless it is accompanied by proper upbringing. According to psychological and social studies, sibling relationships based on bullying leave psychological problems that persist even into adulthood. Therefore, parents must balance the number of children with their ability to provide focused upbringing for them. Some have many children without having the resources, time, or ability to give each one the attention and time they need, resulting in poor relationships between siblings that are devoid of love, leading them to fight over inheritance as if they were the worst enemies. It is not uncommon for sibling rivalry to escalate to the point of murder. Parenting in our era is no longer easy and requires resources, time, and doubled effort from parents, as well as acquiring the necessary psychological knowledge and culture about how to raise children properly. Random and arbitrary upbringing causes wounds, deformities, complexes, and psychological and social problems for children throughout their lives. Therefore, it is the right of children that parents acquire the practical knowledge necessary for their proper upbringing. In an age where books are available at the click of a button and for free, it is no longer an acceptable excuse for parents to claim they were too young when they married, lacked experience, or did not know what was best. All studies on divorce have concluded that the main reason for divorce is the lack of correct knowledge about married life among couples. Thus, it is also a right of spouses to acquire the necessary psychological and social knowledge about married life before marriage. It would be beneficial from all perspectives to include educational scientific material for university students about marriage and child-rearing, based not on traditional culture but on practical studies.
